Joseph's teachers include the late Reverend Gyoko Saito, Higashi Honganji North America, and he trained in Zazen (sitting
meditation) under Karate master Zenko Heshiki, now a Zen priest and Shihan of Chozen-ji Ryu Kempo, Honolulu. In 1990 he was
ordained as a Buddhist priest of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Church at the Higashi Honganji, Kyoto, Japan. He took the dharma
name Rev. Shaku Gyo Joseph Jarman.
That year he founded the Brooklyn
Buddhist Association (with co-founder Rev. Thulani Davis), and opened the JikiShinKan Aikido dojo in the same building. Although
Joseph has retired from running the BBA and JikiShinKan, the center continues today under the leadership of Sensei Stewart
Johnson.
